Theatre: To Gillian On Her 37th Birthday(six LADCC Awards), Days and Nights Within (Back Alley Theatre), Love Letters with Kathy Baker and Tom Skerritt, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (Tamarind Theatre), and he was invited last season to direct at the Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference. Television: director of “Law & Order,” “Boston Legal” and “The Closer,” executive producer/director of “Picket Fences” (for which he won two Emmy Awards®), director of Anne Tyler’s Saint Maybe for Hallmark Hall of Fame and David E. Kelley’s “Chicago Hope” pilot (Director’s Guild nomination). Film: To Gillian...with Clare Danes and Michelle Pfeiffer, Those Lips, Those Eyes with Frank Langella and Tom Hulce, and he wrote and directed Frankie and Johnny Are Married starring his wife, Lisa Chess, and Alan Rosenberg. The film, for which Michael won the Renaissance Award (Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival) and the cast won the Best Acting Ensemble (Ashland Film Festival), was about the experience of directing the stage play of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. Studied acting and stage directing at Carnegie-Mellon University, and film at California Institute of the Arts, where he was on the board of trustees from 1980 to 2000.
